Fergus

Driving NW on Highway 6, you find the small city of Fergus. It is interesting because as we spoke of the smaller rivers of Guelph dumping into the Grand to the south, we find that Fergus rests on the Grand River to the North. What a windy river this is.

The city is also home to the Fergus Scottish Festival Highland Games. Each August, Scottish heritage is celebrated through music, crafts, and heavy event championships. And the hosts will bid each visitor a hearty Taphadh Leibh as they exit the fairgrounds (that is, ‘thank you’ is Scottish Gaelic).

Rockwood

If you head northeast out of Guelph, you will come upon a turn on Highway 7. This is Rockwood. Yet, before you come to that intersection, you see the entrance to the Rockwood Conservation Area.

This is an oasis of camping, canoeing, hiking, and fishing; if it has to do with the outdoors, there is something for you to do there. Seated on the Eramosa River, the scenery from places like Rockwood Falls and Sable Water Island is worth your trip.

Acton

Just another 10 kilometres past Rockwood, you find Acton. You will discover many activities here, from the PGA-approved, eighteen-hole golf course, Blue Springs Golf Club, to ice skating at Acton Arena, as well as outdoor activities in Prospect Park alongside Fairy Lake.

Acton has also been known for leather. They celebrate its history annually with the Leathertown Festival.
