Living and Driving in London, Ontario

London, Ontario, is located in Southwestern Ontario, north of Lake Erie and the United States border. It is Canada’s 11th largest metropolitan area and the birthplace of Justin Bieber. It is home to several colleges, hospitals, businesses, and an international airport. The University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College are located here. These colleges and three major hospitals are the top employers in this city. But for those who work outside of the community, Highways 401 and 402 are easily accessible and allow easy commuting to Toronto and other major cities. Despite having a large city feel, many residents own a car and commute by car, truck, or van. But if you would prefer to commute via bus, the London Transit is also available.

London has seen a 10%  increase in its population since 2016, thereby growing the potential for increased traffic. However, the cost of living here remains lower than in most other Ontario cities. In addition to the city, London is home to many parks and pedestrian trails, making it a desirable place to live.

What Does My Auto Insurance Policy in London Cover?

Auto insurance is designed to protect you in several ways. The primary reason you should buy auto insurance is it protects you against liability when you are involved in an auto accident where you are responsible for someone else’s injuries or property damage.

Direct Compensation-Property Damage (DC-PD) is coverage that protects you and your vehicle. It covers your auto and its contents as well as the loss of use of your auto, and the payment will come directly from your insurance provider. DC-PD only applies if the accident occurs in Ontario and there was more than one vehicle involved. Also, at least one of the other vehicles must be insured by a company that is licensed in Ontario or has a special agreement with FSCO to provide insurance coverage.

Collision coverage is optional and covers your car. It is a valuable coverage to have if an accident does not qualify for DC-PD and you want to ensure you can get your car fixed.

Statutory accident benefits coverage pays for your medical bills if you are injured in an auto accident regardless of who caused the accident, and it pays for income loss as well.

There is always a concern that another driver will not have auto insurance. Therefore, auto insurance in Ontario includes uninsured automobile coverage to provide coverage if you or your passengers are killed or injured by an uninsured motorist or hit-and-run driver.

These are the basic auto insurance coverages in Ontario, and you can add extra coverages by endorsement or increasing certain limits.

What Are Some Fun Activities in London, Ontario?

There is no shortage of things to do in London, from reveling in musical or theater venues to strolling along parks and museums. One of these parks is Victoria Park, which is located in downtown London. It is the site for many music festivals and other events during warmer weather, with an ice skating rink and a Christmas tree lighting for the winter holidays. Initially used by the British garrison, the park now houses some cannons, statues, and memorials, and is a great place for picnics or a stroll.

If you are into sports, Budweiser Gardens is a must-see. This is the sports venue for Ontario’s hockey team, the London Knights, and their basketball team, the London Lightning. Located in downtown London, it is also the site of many concerts and other events.

East Park is a golf course, water, and amusement park in London that is fun for both children and adults alike. They have indoor and outdoor activities, including rock climbing, an arcade, a wave pool, and picnic areas. Easily accessible from Highway 401, it should be a definite stop on your visit to London.

London Roads and Surrounding Areas

London has quite a few neighborhoods that one could call home. Fortunately, all of these locations are close to the 401 and have easy access to anywhere you may need to travel within Ontario. Niagara Falls is only about a 2-hour drive, and the Via Rail provides routes from into Toronto, which makes any neighborhood within London a convenient place to live. That being said, here are some of the more notable neighborhoods and roads you will want to pay particular attention to:

On the east side of London is the neighborhood of Argyle. This neighborhood is so large that it is comprised of smaller neighborhoods within, including: Pottersburg, Nelson Park, Trafalgar Heights, and the Hale Street District. Argyle starts at Oxford Street East and runs through Veterans Memorial Parkway, Trafalgar Street, and Kiwanis Park. Retail stores, restaurants, and other amenities are not too far on Dundas Street or the Argyle mall on Clarke Road.

The Byron neighborhood is located in the southwestern part of London and borders the Thames River. Byron has a small town and picturesque feel, and is an excellent alternative for those who want to remain in London but move out of the city. It is home to many parks, such as Springbank, Storybook Gardens, and Jorgenson Park, which is the Byron Optimist Community Centre site, so there is a lot to explore here. Byron’s major roads you can encounter include Colonel Talbot Road, Byron Baseline Road, Boler Road, Southdale Road West, Westdel Bourne, and Oxford Street West.

Fox Hollow

The Fox Hollow neighborhood is in the northwestern part of London and sits between Fanshawe Park Road West to the South and Sunningdale Road West to the North. A vast majority of this neighborhood is made up of farmland, but there are some housing developments as well. Though not located in Fox Hollow, those who live here will have easy access to the Sunningdale golf course and are not too far from the city of Melrose.

If your car is older and you do not have a loan on it, you might consider dropping the collision coverage. Just be aware that you may not have coverage for damage to your car depending on the circumstances of an accident.

Finally, shop around for auto insurance on occasion. Auto insurers are always looking for ways to lower their premiums. You might find that another insurance company offers a better rate than the one you are currently getting.
