Living and Driving in Peterborough, Ontario

Peterborough is a town situated on the Otonabee River in the southeastern part of Ontario. It sits between Toronto and Ottawa, making it a convenient location for those who work in either of those cities. Transportation to both Toronto and Ottawa is accessible by bus or train via the GO Transit Station, but the majority of individuals who live in Peterborough own a car.

All the roads in Ontario make up the Provincial Highway Network maintained by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). Peterborough has access to all major highways, including Highway 401 and Highway 407 East.

Highway 115 connects the city of Toronto and Peterborough via those two highways as well. Other major throughways in Peterborough are Highway 7A and Highway 28, which routes southwest and east of the city respectfully.

What Does My Auto Insurance Policy in Peterborough Cover?

Auto insurance is designed to protect you in several ways. The primary reason you should buy auto insurance is it protects you against liability when you are involved in an auto accident where you are responsible for someone else’s injuries or property damage.

Direct Compensation-Property Damage (DC-PD) is coverage that protects you and your vehicle. It covers your auto and its contents as well as the loss of use of your auto, and the payment will come directly from your insurance provider. DC-PD only applies if the accident occurs in Ontario and there was more than one vehicle involved. Also, at least one of the other vehicles must be insured by a company that is licensed in Ontario or has a special agreement with FSCO to provide insurance coverage.

Collision coverage is optional and covers your car. It is a valuable coverage to have if an accident does not qualify for DC-PD and you want to ensure you can get your car fixed.

Statutory accident benefits coverage pays for your medical bills if you are injured in an auto accident regardless of who caused the accident, and it pays for income loss as well.

There is always a concern that another driver will not have auto insurance. Therefore, auto insurance in Ontario includes uninsured automobile coverage to provide coverage if you or your passengers are killed or injured by an uninsured motorist or hit-and-run driver.

These are the basic auto insurance coverages in Ontario, and you can add extra coverages by endorsement or increasing certain limits.

What Are Some Fun Activities in Peterborough, Ontario?

There are many things to do and see in Peterborough, from local events to breweries and beyond. These are just some of the things to experience while you are visiting:

The Riverview Park and Zoo is in northern Peterborough, near downtown, and features over 25 animal exhibits. Situated on 55 acres, there are walking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and a splash pad in addition to the animal exhibits. Admission is free, and there is something for everyone to do, so it is definitely worth a visit.

The Trent-Severn Waterway is another spot to visit as it passes through Peterborough. This waterway is 386 kilometers long that connects Lakes Ontario and Huron at Port Severn. This location is unique because it contains the Peterborough Lift Lock, which has been open since 1904 and was once considered the world’s highest hydraulic lift. A boat trip will allow you to witness the process and learn the history of this site. If you happen to visit Peterborough in the winter, be sure to stop by for ice skating, as the portion below the lift lock is frozen and maintained as a rink.

As with most of Ontario, Peterborough is home to many nature trails and parks. Jackson Park is one you do not want to miss. You can kayak on Jackson Creek or go for a hike, bike ride, or run on one of the park’s many trails. Be on the lookout for the Pagoda Bridge, which is a landmark here. As the site of many weddings, it is a great photo op with the family!

Other attractions you will not want to miss in Peterborough include:

  • Canadian Canoe Museum
  • Art Gallery of Peterborough
  • Petroglyphs Provincial Park
  • Publican Craft Brewery
  • Millennium Park
  • Peterborough Skate Park
  • Peterborough Marina

Peterborough Roads and Surrounding Areas

There are many neighborhoods in Peterborough, and all of them are desirable for different reasons. Depending on your needs, you may want to consider one of the following Peterborough neighborhoods:

East City

The East City neighborhood of Peterborough is located close to downtown and within walking distance of Little Lake and many nature trails. Residents say this neighborhood feels like a city within a city and has a close-knit community feel.

East City is also the oldest area of Peterborough, so the homes are older and eclectic. But it is an up-and-coming area and would be great for younger professionals who want to be close to the action of downtown. Some of the major roads you may find yourself on in Peterborough are Maria Street, Burnham Street, Rogers Street, and Ashburnham Drive.

University Heights

The neighborhood of University Heights is located in the north end section of Peterborough and close to Trent University. The homes in this neighborhood are more upscale and better suited for families who would prefer a quiet place to call home.

Despite the proximity to a college, the homes are far enough away not to be disruptive but close enough for convenience. The main roads you may encounter here are Champlain Drive, Champlain Crescent, and University Heights Boulevard.

Kawartha Heights

Located in the West End of Peterborough, Kawartha Heights is a neighborhood for young families. The homes tend to be more affordable here, with easy access to Highway 115, making it a desirable location for commuters. The main roads in this neighborhood are Kawartha Heights Boulevard, Brealey Drive, Ridewood Road, and Cherryhill Road.

If your car is older and you do not have a loan on it, you might consider dropping the collision coverage. Just be aware that you may not have coverage for damage to your car depending on the circumstances of an accident.

Finally, shop around for auto insurance on occasion. Auto insurers are always looking for ways to lower their premiums. You might find that another insurance company offers a better rate than the one you are currently getting.
