Does Having a Full G License Lower My Insurance?

Does Having a Full G License Lower My Insurance? The information provided below does not apply to everyone in any circumstance in regards to a Full G License. There is a wide range of factors that are taken into consideration and insurance is unique to the policy holder. To confirm if any of the below information applies to you, feel free to give our brokerage, Duliban Insurance Brokers Ltd, a call at 1-(855) 385-4226.

A Full G License, also known as a Graduated G License, is what drivers receive after completing a GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) program. These programs are mainly for young or inexperienced drivers and offer training and a supervised driving experience so they will feel safer and more confident while on the road.

Many of these programs are made up of three stages. They are:

  • Learner Stage – supervised driving, accompanied by a driving test.
  • Intermediate Stage: Limited unsupervised driving, introduction to driving in high-risk situations.
  • Full Privilege Stage: the student earns a standard driver’s license.

In Ontario, driver’s licenses are in three categories, G1, G2, and G. The G1 has limited driving privileges for students. And the full G class driver’s license allows the individual to drive almost any vehicle. The vehicles they can’t drive with a Full G license include a motorcycle or air-brake equipped vehicle such as a bus.  Most residents of Ontario will get their G license after one year of holding a G2 license.

What are the Benefits of a Full G License?

Ontario drivers are encouraged to obtain a G license as soon as they are eligible to do so. That’s because it provides the holder with several great benefits that you can’t get with a standard driver’s license; those benefits include:

  • A G license will not expire. The driver only has to take additional testing upon reaching a certain age.
  • Having a G License may help lower your car insurance rates.
  • A G license gives you the ability to drive with minimal restrictions or qualified passengers.

The license and the additional training that comes along with it can help inexperienced drivers have more confidence and control while on the road. Learning to drive is a scary experience and even the smallest boost of confidence can help make things a little less stressful for young drivers while they are behind the wheel.

Who Can Apply for a Full G Driver’s License?

Ontario residents who are at least 16 years of age can apply for a driver’s license. Those who are new to driving will need to practice and gain more experience on the road before they attain a standard or G license with full driving privileges. After passing an eye exam and a written test, drivers get their G1 license, which allows restricted driving. To earn their full G license, the driver will have to finish two training levels, G1 and G2, and successfully pass two road tests.

How can a G License Help Lower Your Car Insurance Rates?

Having a G License in Ontario can help you save on your auto insurance policy. Insurance companies know that drivers who hold this license have additional knowledge and training than other drivers. Therefore, they provide them with special discounts upon completion of the G license courses.

The G1 training classes prove the driver has met the minimum standards for safely operating a motor vehicle.

How Much Can I Save On my Auto Insurance Policy While Holding a Full G License?

The discount drivers typically receive is 10% on select coverages. Although it is not a guarantee, it may help drivers improve their record to ensure further that their policy rate will drop each year they are accident-free.

It’s possible to be eligible for even more coverage once the driver’s record reaches 6*.  When that happens, they are eligible for Driving Record Protector and a Conviction Free Discount Protector. That discount helps by forgiving some driving errors, and may not cause a rate change. It can also add more stability to your insurance policy rate so drivers can avoid unwanted price increases.

Do I Have to Wait to Renew My Policy Once I Have My G License?

One of the best things about getting a G license is the holder doesn’t have to wait until renewal to enjoy the benefits. Drivers may call the same day they get their G license and have the discount applied. They may even receive cashback since the discount is pro-rated and they can receive the difference of what they already paid for their policy that year.
