What to Expect When Getting Your M Licence in Ontario

Step 1: Getting Your M1 Motorcycle License in Ontario
The first step in your motorcycle journey begins with the M1 license – a written knowledge test, similar to the G1 test. You can take this test at a DriveTest Centre, and once you pass, you’ll receive your M1 license.
Important restrictions with an M1:

- Zero blood alcohol level
- No passengers
- No riding on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways
You have a very short window of time between receiving your M1 and M2. The M1 license is only valid for 90 days; you must wait at least 60 days to take the M2 license test.
Step 2: Moving Up to M2
To receive your Ontario M2 license, you must pass a road test that evaluates your basic riding skills. Because you have a short time frame to pass this road test from when you received your M1, it is important to schedule your time accordingly.
Many new riders choose to take a motorcycle safety course during this time, which often includes:

After successfully holding your M2 driver’s license for at least 18–22 months (depending on whether you completed a recognized safety course), you can take your final road test to earn your full M license.
This advanced test focuses on:

- Once you pass, you’ll have full riding privileges with limited restrictions.
What About M(M) Licenses?
Some riders may receive an M(M) license, which limits them to operating three-wheeled motorcycles only. This typically happens if the road test is completed using a three-wheeled vehicle. If you want the flexibility to ride standard two-wheel motorcycles, you’ll need to test on one.
