Auto theft across Canada continues to be a serious and costly issue, with annual losses estimated at up to $900 million. Even though many vehicle manufacturers have introduced improved security features and Canadian vehicle owners are becoming more aware of theft prevention options, auto theft remains a significant issue.
To once again try to stay ahead of this nationwide concern, CAA Insurance Company has released its updated High Theft Auto List for 2026. If you currently own one of these vehicles or are planning to buy one, it’s important to understand how this update could impact your coverage.
Effective July 1, 2026
The updated High Theft Risk Premium Surcharge applies:
- New Business: Effective July 1, 2026
- Renewals: Effective July 1, 2026
The surcharge applies to eligible 2022 model year vehicles and newer that have been identified as having a higher risk of theft.
Which Vehicles Are on the High Theft List
CAA’s updated list applies to vehicles from the 2022 model year or newer. The following models are now classified as high theft and will be subject to a surcharge:
- Acura, TLX
- Lexus, GX550
- Lexus, TX500H
- Toyota, Land Cruiser
- Lexus, RX500h
- Lexus, TX350
- Toyota, Sequoia
- Toyota, Tundra
- Jeep, Wrangler
- Land Rover, Defender
- Land Rover, Range Rover (Sport, Evoque & Velar)
- Lexus, RX350
- Lexus, RX450
- Lexus, GX460
- Toyota, Highlander (incl. Grand Highlander)
- Toyota, 4Runner
In addition, the surcharge also applies to:
- Any other vehicle with an MSRP of$125,000 or greater (regardless of make or model, excluding Electric Vehicles)
Why are these vehicles included?
High-demand and large SUVs and crossovers make up the majority of the list. These vehicles are often targeted because:
- Strong resale value
- Market demand for stolen vehicles and parts
- Repair and replacement costs
- Recovery rates
How can you help protect your vehicle?
No vehicle is completely theft-proof; however, taking preventative measures can help reduce the risk of theft. Some of the most common tips include:
- Park in a locked garage whenever possible
- Lock your doors and close all windows
- Store key fobs in a signal-blocking pouch when not in use to help prevent relay theft
- Install an improved tracking and recovery device
- Use a steering wheel lock to deter theft attempts
- Never leave valuables or spare keys in the vehicle
What This Means for Your Car Insurance
Changes take effect July 1, 2026, for both new and active policies. If your vehicle is on the High Theft Risk list, or you plan to purchase one, you must understand how the surcharge can affect your premiums. This high-theft surcharge does not reflect your driving history; rather, the elevated theft risk associated with the make and model.
