If you are a licensed driver in Ontario, you probably have heard about the upcoming changes in Accident Benefit coverage for policies renewing after July 1, 2026. While coverage will remain the same unless you have indicated that you want to remove certain coverages, changes are happening that will impact all drivers, and even their passengers, regardless of renewal date.
Beginning July 1, the newly optional Accident Benefits will only apply to:
- The named insured(s)
- The spouse of the named insured
- Dependants of the named insured and spouse
- Drivers specifically listed on the policy
Before this change, many Accident Benefits could extend to a broader group of individuals, including other passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and others who may not have been specifically named on the policy. This means that even if you keep all existing coverage and make no changes come your renewal, the group of people eligible to access optional benefits will become much more limited after July 1.
For example, a friend riding as a passenger in your vehicle, an unlisted occasional driver, or an uninsured pedestrian involved in an accident may no longer have access to the same coverage available before the Auto Reform. These benefits include:
- Income Replacement
- Caregiver
- Non-Earner
- Housekeeping
- Death
- Funeral Benefits
Accident benefits that remain mandatory include Medical, Rehabilitation, and Attendant Care, and will continue to provide protection. However, the changes to eligibility for optional benefits make it more important than ever to review who is listed on your policy and discuss your family’s coverage needs with your dedicated insurance broker.
At Duliban Insurance, we’re helping clients understand exactly how the reform affects their households so they can make informed decisions to avoid unexpected coverage gaps.
