Auto theft continues to be a serious issue across Canada, particularly in urban areas where crime rings are targeting high-value vehicles. Even with improved anti-theft technology, certain makes and models remain at the top of thieves’ lists.
To stay ahead of this ongoing concern, CAA Insurance Company has released its updated High Theft Auto List for 2025. If you currently own one of these vehicles or are planning to buy one, it’s important to understand how this update could impact your coverage.
When Does This Take Affect
The surcharge will apply to all new policies issued on or after June 15, 2025, and to renewals effective June 30, 2025 or later. This gives vehicle owners and insurance clients some time to plan, but the changes will be here soon.
Which Vehicles Are on the High Theft List
CAA’s updated list applies to vehicles from the 2021 model year or newer. The following models are now classified as high theft and will be subject to a surcharge:
- Dodge RAM 1500
- Jeep Wrangler
-
Land Rover Defender
-
Land Rover Range Rover (including Sport, Evoque, and Velar)
-
Lexus RX350
-
Lexus RX500h
-
Lexus GX460
-
Lexus RX450
-
Lexus TX350
-
Toyota Highlander (including Grand Highlander)
-
Toyota Sequoia
-
Toyota Tundra
-
Toyota 4Runner
Large trucks and SUVs make up the majority of the list. These vehicles are often targeted because of their higher resale value, popularity, and demand in international markets.
What Else Is Affected?
In addition to the specific models listed, any vehicle with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $125,000 or more (excluding electric vehicles) will also face a surcharge under this program.
Further eligibility details and documentation requirements are available in the Ontario Automobile Manual. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is impacted, it’s best to consult with your broker or check the manual directly.
What This Means for You
If your vehicle is on the list, or you plan to purchase one, expect a potential increase in your insurance premium. This doesn’t reflect your driving history, but rather the elevated theft risk associated with the make and model.
If you’re already insured through CAA, your renewal won’t be affected until after June 30, 2025. Still, it’s a good idea to review your coverage now and consider theft-prevention tools such as GPS tracking, anti-theft devices, or even parking in secure areas when possible.
